Tour Overview
The Tecomate Tours 5 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route through the Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation for being beautiful but the most difficult route on Mount Kilimanjaro climbing. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe path is a short, steep, and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp on day 2 of the trek, the trail takes the southern circuit to the summit. The descent is made by the Mweka path which trekkers who take the Lemosho, Machame, and Northern circuits trail use the same descending route. The 5-Day Umbwe route is regarded as extremely tough due to its steepness in the first two days and the small amount of time for acclimatization. This path is attempted by strong hikers who are confident in their abilities to acclimate to the altitude.

On the second day of your trip, the first part of the trail continues along the ridge. After leaving the woodland, you’ll trek through wide moorlands toward Baranco camp. The hike will take us five hours, including lunch. Barranco Camp is often recognized as the most gorgeous campsite on the Umbwe Trail, surrounded by massive Senecio and lobelias. Barranco Camp is in a valley, thus the sun rises later than the other campgrounds. Tecomate Tours Climbing will provide dinner and overnight accommodation at the Barranco Camp
On day three, you will climb the Barranco Wall, which is an impressive-looking challenge. Don’t let this intimidate you. You’ll find it’s not as difficult as it appears. It will take you around one hour to reach the top of the rocky wall. Some areas of the wall will require you to use your hands to get a stronger grip, but no technical climbing experience is required. When you get to Karanga Camp, Tecomate Tours Climbing will give you lunch, following which you will rest before continuing on to Barafu Camp via hiking. Our team will be with you every step of the journey, lending a helping hand wherever necessary. The entire hike from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp will take you about 8 hours including lunch.
Around midnight, the Tecomate Tours team will wake you up with a warm cup of tea and biscuits to prepare you for your final ascent. As you make your way up to Stella Point at 5,730 metres above sea level, your only source of light will be your headlamps and, on a lucky day, moonlight. You’ll arrive at the crater rim in around 5 to 7 hours. Another 1 to 2 hours will take you to Uhuru Peak, where you can watch the sunrise over Africa’s rooftops. After recording this spectacular vista and achievement on video, you will begin your descent along the same road back to Barafu camp. Our team will be ready for you with snacks and refreshments. You’ll relax in your tents before heading to Mweka Camp for your final night atop Africa’s highest mountain. Dinner will be given at Mweka Camp, following which you will rest for the night.
Day 6 is the final day of your incredible trip with Tecomate Tours and Safari service. The day begins after breakfast with our team’s traditional farewell ceremony, followed by the descent. The descent from Mweka Gate (1,600 meters above sea level) will take 2 to 3 hours. At the gate, you will sign out of the park and eat lunch before being driven back to your hotel for rest and an overnight stay.
